INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

WHAT IS AN INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT SYSTEM?

An integrated management system, put simply, is a single documented management system, designed and implemented to satisfy the requirements of all the relevant management system standards that is required by an organisation (i.e. Quality, Environmental and Health & Safety).

ASSESSMENT AND CERTIFICATION

The assessment and certification of an integrated management system is similar in process to that for quality (ISO 9000) or environmental (ISO 14001), depending on which management system standards have been implemented.

The difference between the assessment and certification of a stand alone system and an integrated one would be the audit duration, cost and auditor(s); details of which would be available on an individual basis on request.

AMTAC Certification Services is regulated by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) and accredited to undertake third party assessment and certification services for both ISO 9000 and ISO 14001.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

An integrated management system will allow an organisation to incorporate the requirements of additional management system standards, into the pre existing documented systems, without undue amounts of duplication, documentation and bureaucracy. An overview of the benefits is given below:

Reduce duplication in common areas/requirements
Reduce internal audit and management review requirements
Keep documentation simple with generic procedures and records
Potential reductions in the assessment duration and cost of third party certification

HOW TO IMPLEMENT AN INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

How an organisation chooses to undertake the implementation of an integrated management system might depend on whether they are amending an existing documented management system or starting from the beginning. One method of implementation is the 'step by step' approach which allows an organisation to implement changes or new requirements in planned stages, however, this may result in duplication of work in areas that are interrelated if not carefully planned at the earliest stages.
