Legislation - Scope & Guidelines

The majority of domestic electrical products fall under the mandatory requirements for safety as detailed in the EU Low voltage Directive, which has been implemented into UK law as the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations.
Products covered by this legislation must be safe and labelled in a satisfactory manner, including CE Marking. A technical file should be held by the importer to the EU, or the EU manufacturer as appropriate. The file should include sufficient technical documentation to support the CE Marking - this is generally best undertaken by the inclusion of an independent UKAS accredited laboratory certificate, demonstrating compliance with an appropriate EU harmonised standard.
Plugs and Sockets are a special case and specific regulations apply to these electrical accessories.
